Picked up a couple more dollars
Written by Eric Van
Wednesday, 20 August 2008
I'll post the pictures out here as soon as I take them, but I picked up two more dollars.  These are non errors, but are slabbed NGC PR70 coins.  So they should be halfway decent in value since the population should remain fairly low.  At least that's my theory.  Hopefully it holds true.  Obviously the price that I paid for them is nowhere near the PCGS price guide values, but it sounds good telling my friends that I paid 50 bucks for a coin that the guide rates at 300.

So here's what I got.
2007-S Madison presidential dollar PR70 NGC
2008-S Martin Van Buren presidential dollar PR70 NGC

They look nice, and will go right into the long term folders.

Missed another coin club meeting
Written by Bob
Saturday, 24 May 2008
I just can't seem to win.  I missed the first meeting since I was out all week travelling for work.  I missed the meeting on May 14th because I've been dealing with an emergency at work for the past 4 weeks.

Now, looking forward, maybe I can get to a meeting.  Well, about that.  My wife is due on the 23rd of June with our second son, and the meeting is on the 16th.  Hmmm.. Is it worth sleeping on the couch?

I picked up a couple more Presidential dollars
Written by Bob
Sunday, 27 April 2008
I haven't actually received them yet, but I "won" two presidential dollars on eBay.  Regardless of the fact that I "won" them, I feel that I got a pretty good deal.

Since I decided to go with the Presidential dollars set, I wanted to be a bit more specific on what exactly I was looking for.  I took a look at the PCGS sets, and decided to start small with the proof set.  The funny part is that even with only 8 different coins released over 2 years, there are still 16 different proof strikes that you can get.  Compare that with the 55 different non proof variations, and I think that the proofs are where I'll stay.

Where is the best place to get coins?
Written by Bob
Thursday, 24 April 2008
So I got the urge to start collecting coins again.  I think that I am going to focus on the presidential dollars since they are still coming out, and I can get them as they come out and can keep up with relatively low cost.washdollarsmoothedgefront.jpg

So I have two questions to everyone.
1) What grade should I collect?  I was looking at the different sets, and was thinking of collecting PR70's for each.  That way I could get NGC or PCGS certified PR70's and just let them sit for years.  The population stays low, and there aren't many variations so it would be easy to get them.

2) Where is the best place to get NGC or PCGS slabbed PR70 coins?  Dealers, eBay, other internet site?  Let me know.

Did I get a good deal???

Getting into coin collecting can be somewhat daunting when you start to look around and see single coins going for 1k, 2k, 5k, 10k...  I obviously don't have that much to spend on my "hobby".  So where do I start?

I've decided that I'm going to start with the Mercury dimes.  I've always liked dimes, and the Mercury dimes seem like a good challenge, and when looking at how to grade them(Coincentric guide), seem fairly straightforward.

so, onto the real story.  Since I've decided to go with dimes, I searched out online for dimes, and it happened across a list of Mercury Dimes in my area.

eBay and Coin Collecting
Written by Eric Van
Friday, 18 April 2008
So here's the question.  Is eBay a good thing or a bad thing for collecting coins?  I personally bought my Washington Smooth edge dollar on Ebay, and picked it up for 66 dollars.  I thought that was a decent deal, and when I looked around at other sites that sold it, it was in excess of 125.

Is eBay driving down the prices of coins?  Or is it just making it easier for newbies like me to get their hands on a huge number of coins?

Personally, I really like eBay and I like that there are so many choices on there, however there is more to it than just that.

Found a Coin Club
Written by Eric Van
Thursday, 17 April 2008
OK, so I missed my first coin collectors meeting, but I was able to find one that is literally down the road.

I actually found the club by going to the American Numismatic Association website at http://www.money.org and searching for my area.  It found one that is about two blocks away from my house and that meets once a month.

Sounds great, but the timing was bad, so I wasn't able to make it.  If you have any experience with coin clubs, please leave me a comment and let me know how they go, and if you think that they are truly worthwhile or not.
